For years, Disney Parks have captured the essence of what it feels like to soar through the sky.
The gentle ascent aboard Dumbo the Flying Elephant, the thrill of flying over London en route to Never Land on Peter Pan’s Flight, the leap to lightspeed on Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, and the twists on Goofy’s Sky School are all experiences that have become part of the Disneyland Resort’s legacy.
When Soarin’ Over California premiered at Disney California Adventure Park, it brought that familiar sensation to a new level, elevating guests higher than ever and offering breathtaking views of the Golden State below.
As your clients prepare for their next adventure with Soarin’ Across America, launching at Disneyland Resort on July 2, discover how this beloved attraction first took flight and continues to soar to new heights.

Exploring the Golden State on Soarin’ Over California
Debuting as part of the grand opening of Disney California Adventure Park in 2001, Soarin’ Over California allowed guests to fulfill their dreams of flight.
Offering an exhilarating airborne journey with sweeping views of California, guests were introduced to inspiring tales of aviation heroes before boarding a state-of-the-art flying machine that captured the essence of hang gliding, all while receiving essential safety tips from chief flight attendant Patrick.
Before the attraction was ready to launch, Disney Imagineers faced the challenge of placing over 80 guests into an 80-foot-high domed screen, a task that ride engineer Mark Sumner tackled. Seeking inspiration during the ride's development, Sumner dug out an old Erector set from his attic, complete with miniature nuts, bolts, girders, pulleys, and hand cranks.
Over several days, Sumner tirelessly assembled a working model. In a moment of creativity, he presented his model, demonstrating a “lift-and-glide” ride system that would become a hallmark of the attraction.

San Fran to Disneyland: Soarin’ Over California Destinations
Soaring through the clouds to reveal San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley vineyards with hot air balloons, Malibu’s sunset shores with surfers, and PGA West at La Quinta with a powerful golf drive are just some of the beloved scenes since the attraction’s debut on February 8, 2001, featuring signature scents and Jerry Goldsmith’s original score.
On an aerial journey from Northern to Southern California, guests visit iconic spots like Yosemite’s Half Dome, Lake Tahoe’s winter slopes, and Monterey’s rugged coastline. They also glide through downtown Los Angeles at night, passing towering buildings and the famously easy-to-navigate 110 freeway.

Soarin’ Over California Fun Fact: Before filming the scene of horses galloping through Anza Borrego State Park, a team conducted a thorough assessment to ensure no artifacts were disturbed, reminiscent of an Indiana Jones adventure!
In the same scene, the iconic Thunderbirds impress with their speed and precision.
At the time, Lt. Col. Brian Bishop led the Thunderbirds, earning the nickname “Be-Bop.” Lead pilots can serve for up to three years, and during filming, Bishop’s tenure was ending. In a fitting finale, “Be-Bop” participated in filming this sequence, marking his final flight as commander and cementing his place in Disney Parks history. It’s a heartfelt tribute that encapsulates the attraction’s magic, reminding fans why Soarin’ is a favorite for visitors worldwide.

Navigating the Globe on Soarin’ Around the World
In summer 2016, Soarin’ Around the World premiered at California Adventure, taking guests beyond California to iconic global landmarks. The updated film replaced California scenes with international destinations like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, and the Matterhorn’s icy peaks.
Soarin’ Around the World Fun Fact: During the Matterhorn sequence filming, the camera froze due to extreme conditions, causing a two-hour delay while it thawed.
The experience features new aerial footage and updated scents that vividly bring each location to life. Composer Bruce Broughton adapted Jerry Goldsmith’s original score for the new show, incorporating regional instruments and recording with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road studios.

What began as a tribute to California’s beauty evolved into a global journey, reflecting the attraction's growing presence in Disney Parks worldwide and offering guests the opportunity to circle the globe in a single flight.
Soarin’ Around the World Destinations:
The Matterhorn (Swiss Alps)
Greenland

Even as the journey expanded globally, the heart of the attraction remained, lifting guests into the sky and delivering the same sense of scale and movement that has defined Soarin’ since its debut at Disneyland Resort.
